The Manoir Comeau was the first hotel in Baie-Comeau. In its early days, it housed the management staff of the Ontario Paper Company (later the Quebec North Shore Paper Company) while the town was being built.
Owned by the Company, it remained a luxury hotel and hosted grand soirées. It was not uncommon for young couples to choose it as their wedding reception venue. The building, which faces the river, welcomed visitors who arrived by sea. This was the only means of transport to the city before the advent of civil aviation after the Second World War and the construction of the provincial road in 1943.
During the 1965 celebrations, a fire broke out. The wooden structure was unable to withstand the flames, and the building was declared a total loss. The Paper Company quickly announced the reconstruction of the building, which, the work of architect M.G. Dunford, featured a façade flanked by masonry turrets topped with sloping copper roofs, like the entire roof. It was inaugurated on August 22, 1968.
